Inclusive vs. Current Playgrounds
Current Playgrounds
Claim to meet ADA requirements by having curb cuts and an access ramp to the playground.
Usually have woodchips for surface, which is dangerous and inaccessible for wheeled devices.
Usually do not offer accessible equipment in the playground.
Inclusive Playgrounds
Fully implement Title 2 of the ADA by ensuring “equal opportunity for benefit” for all users, as the law requires.
Playground surfacing allows travel by all people, including those with mobility disabilities.
Play equipment includes activities for all children along the spectrum of ability and disability.
Examples of Inclusive Playgrounds.
